Podcast for IT Pros: Why RAID is NOT Enough for your Hard Drive Data Backup!

We know many of you out there are using some kind of RAID system for your customer’s hard drive data backup systems.  Heck, you might even be using it for yourself.  The problem is that in our experience at Gillware, most IT pros have shown us that they don’t have the whole story when it comes to RAID systems.  We really do want to help you.  And what we really want to prevent is the story that Tyler shares in this podcast.

For IT Pros: Wait…before you touch that hard drive for data recovery, read this post…

We’re working on some really cool stuff here at Gillware this month.  My part is in the creation of some videos that will better explain what you really need to know as an IT professional before you handle your next hard drive data recovery case.

There is a lot that can go wrong and your entire business could be at stake.  Let me explain…

We’ve seen it happen countless times here at Gillware Data Recovery.  An IT Professional calls us and they are desperate for help in recovering one of their customer’s data.

Only one problem…

They began the process of hard drive data recovery on their own, and in their most valiant efforts, they missed a step, lost a drive, or did something really stupid and as a result have rendered their data unrecoverable.  I want to tell you one of these stories in more detail and remind you to keep your eyes open for more of these video stories coming soon.  It won’t just be the stories, we will also be documenting a process that we hope you will adopt when it comes to recovering data for your customers.  Because in the end, we don’t want what happened to this guy, to happen to you…

As so often happens, the said IT Shop sends us the drive to be recovered, and we do our usual magic of making that data recovery a reality.   Once we have recovered the data, the next step is to show the customer (in this case the IT Pro) a list of the files we are going to send them.  Because remember, we don’t charge you anything until you see your files, and give us the final approval that you want them back.

Upon the IT Pro’s review of the files, we received an earful from him about how we screwed the whole thing up, because the data he’s looking at is not the data he needs.

Why?

Because he sent us the wrong drive and didn’t realize it. Somehow on his end, he mixed up a couple of the hard drives in his shop and instead of sending us the drive he needed data recovery on, he sent us another customer’s drive.  Wooops!

Yeh, wooops is right.  A major violation of privacy that in the end landed the IT Shop in court in a losing battle that included the ultimate closure of his business.

Now, I can hear you saying, “Well John, that guy’s an idiot!  He should know better.  You can’t call yourself an IT professional and be mixing up customer’s drives…”  Yes, I agree with you and I can also tell you that we see it all the time.  You’re shop might not be that busy now, but eventually, as your business grows, you will have lots of drives hanging around and lots of techs that you are trying to manage.  If you are void of a solid system for keeping track of all this stuff, you can make a mistake in a hurry.  And just like in this case, one mistake can cost you EVERyTHING!

Coming soon in this video series we will be documenting the EXACT system we use here at Gillware to track drives.  Now, you may not need a system as elaborate as ours, so we will also be showing you some very simple things you can do so that this NEVER happens to you.  In addition, we also plan to provide for you a specific approach for how we believe you can handle your hard drive data recoveries more systematically, while making more money with less headaches.

Stay tuned…

I thought of you this morning…

Yes, I thought of you.  No, I probably don’t know you but I thought of you…
Why?
Because as I transported my Western Digital 1TB mirrored external drive from home to my office the fragility of my data was centered on my mind.  Like a cross from the right-wing of the Germans, my drive was waiting to [...]

Stop Right there! Back Away! It’s time to call in the SWAT Team…

As Americans, we pride ourselves on self-sufficiency, problem-solving, and autonomy.  And in fact, in regards to that third one (autonomy), the information-age has give us even more opportunity to express ourselves.  As one writer recently put it, anyone with a couple thousand dollars can build their own ‘factory.’  And in this [...]

Want to sleep better, take a quick look at your Quickbooks…

On Saturday night I stayed up later than I wanted to.  And it wasn’t because I got sucked in to a great late night movie on some far away channel.  I was reviewing my Quickbooks data.
Why?
The hard drive that my Quickbooks data lives on was acting funny.  When my wife went to [...]
