Solid State Hard Drives – Not the future we bargained for….Yet!

I had a chance recently to sit down with Scott Holewinski to discuss the white paper he and Greg Andrzejewski of Gillware Data Recovery has written for the annual technology show in Las Vegas.  It was an interesting chat.  And in an effort to keep it simple for the lay person (myself included) I will attempt to lay out our conversation in a series of posts on this blog under the title heading of “State of the Solid State Hard Drive Address”.  My goal will be to provide you with the basics of what you should know today about solid state hard drives, and the challenges they present when it comes to data recovery.

In the mean time, I also encourage you to read the entire white paper, “Data Recovery from Solid State Hard Drives.”

The paper Scott and Greg wrote specifically discusses the nuances involved in providing data recovery for Solid State hard drives.  Along the way, however, it becomes an education about hard drives in general, and how and why solid state drives are emerging.

One thing you should know as a consumer is that solid state hard drives are still not as reliable as traditional hard drives; and when it comes to recovery…the process remains much more cumbersome, difficult, and costly.   Regardless, it remains vital for us here at Gillware to continue our research and development into these types of drives because it remains our mission to be ready and able to handle any type of drive sent to us directly for data recovery purposes.
