I thought of you this morning…
Yes, I thought of you. No, I probably don’t know you but I thought of you…
Why?
Because as I transported my Western Digital 1TB mirrored external drive from home to my office the fragility of my data was centered on my mind. Like a cross from the right-wing of the Germans, my drive was waiting to be placed carefully into the back of the net. That is, of course, if it makes it there. There are probably a thousand other things that can happen to that ball instead.
It’s July 6th and yesterday was a holiday. So this morning I’m a little groggy and definitely less focused than usual on a Tuesday morning and as I moved that drive from my mud room out to my car I realized just how easily it could have slipped out from under my arm and crashed to the ground. It happens every day to people just like you, and me and so it made me think of you.
First of all…do you have a mirrored system like this, and a transport plan for keeping two copies of your data in different places?
And if you don’t, do you at least have some kind of remote data backup system in place?
If your answer to one or both of these questions is NO, than I need to talk to you. Or you need to talk to us. Or, you can continue to rely on the real possibility that one morning you’ll wake up, and something unforseen will happen to your data.
So, my third question is…what will you do then?
