Part II: Lost in Data…but not for long

In my last installment in this series I discussed the new problem I have of storing and backing up all of the data that accumulates when you start filming and producing high-quality HD movies on a regular basis.  This post is a little overdo, so I though I had better get it done.  I had promised to tell you how I’ve decided to handle my backups of movies, pictures, etc now that I’m running all of that on my new MAC.

Here’s what I did…

I purchased two 1 TB Western Digital Mirrored systems.  Quickly for those of you who don’t know what ‘mirrored’ means, there are two 1 TB inside the external drive case and they both hold a replica of each other so that if one of them fails, the other still has all the data.

Now, if you’ve been paying attention to this blog you know that this is good but that it is still missing one very crucial component – there is still no remote data backup.  So, if I have a flood, fire, or some kind of other catastrophe such as my kids and their friends trying to mimic world cup moves inside my basement office, a crash or drowning drive means that both drives have the potential of crashing together and then I have nothing.

How did I solve this problem?

I invested in two mirrored systems.  One sits at a remote location and one is attached to my MAC.  I make the switch once per month and I have to be diligent about backing up to the one that’s attached all month.  But as long as I back it up once and make the switch than the most I would lose is a month’s worth of stuff.

Pretty simple, you just have to do it!

So do it will you?

It will save you a lot of headaches…
